We’ve just received notice from our friends at St. Thomas Acquinas Academy Elementary in Peshtigo that as part of their Advent/Christmas project, students collected funds to order items off the Rainbow House Amazon Wish-list.  Items should be arriving later this week.  Thank you so much, students, for supporting survivors of domestic violence and their children in our community!

Inferno Fitness of Marinette did a collection for the Rainbow House during the month of December. They dropped off the much needed supplies today and filled our back hall. Lots of kitchen appliances and gadgets, dishes, towels/wash cloths, paper products, and cleaning supplies, etc.  Thank you for your support!

New Online LGBTQ+ Survivors support group

I wanted to share with you an exciting new group Turningpoint has launched in 2023. This week, we began our LGBTQ+ Survivors support group. This group is designed to bring together LGBTQ+ survivors of intimate partner and/or sexual violence in a healing and transformative way, to discuss the barriers and triumphs of healing from violence as an LGBTQ+ person.
This group is open, meaning anyone may join at any time, and will meet every Tuesday from 6-7:30p via Zoom, to ensure that the group remains accessible and functional for as many participants as possible. We hope to include survivors from all over the state of Wisconsin, and across the country.

Rainbow House is delighted to announce we received a grant from the Basic Needs Giving Partnership of the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation, a funding collaborative which includes funds from the U.S. Venture Open Fund for Basic Needs, the J. J. Keller Foundation and other community donors.

This award sponsors our agency’s ability to provide the services of a Therapist for survivors of Domestic Violence in Oconto County.  If you are experiencing Domestic Violence, and feel you may need services, please arrange to speak with an Advocate at (715) 735-6656.

As part of their community year-end giving program, Stephenson National Bank and Trust gave Rainbow House $1,250.  We used the funding to acquire personal protection notification devices for survivors. The Smart Emergency Button is a  portable silent alarm button that sends free automatic GPS location texts and phone calls to your emergency contacts.  We also acquired detectors that can help identify tracking devices or hidden cameras.  Thank you, SNB&T, for helping to keep our community safer in 2023!

Medical College of WI Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Grant Awarded:
Narrative: Milwaukee domestic violence homicides have soared since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a story in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “In two weeks, six women lost their lives to domestic violence in Milwaukee County. They were mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends. All were women of color. All died by gunfire.” This profound loss demands creative solutions.  One of the central flaws of the current response to domestic violence is the placement of all accountability and action on the victim. The victim must call for help, seek shelter, develop a safety plan, file a restraining order, attend a support group, and provide a victim impact statement in court. The burden of safety and change is placed squarely on the victim’s already deflated shoulders. However, the one who causes harm possesses the power and control in the relationship. What if that individual was held responsible and offered a voluntary helpline in the hopes of deterring violence? This project will bring Wisconsin an alternative resource for those who cause harm to their intimate partner and family relationships that would serve to de-escalate family violence and reduce the risk of harm. The goal is to develop a model program for Milwaukee, served by Alma Center, and then to expand this pilot into a rural community, served by Rainbow House Domestic Abuse Services. Once both urban and rural models are established, the plan is to expand the program statewide.  Community partners: Rainbow House Domestic Abuse Services, Inc.
